Work Experiences:
Professor Osman Galal, M.D., Ph.D.;
is a Professor of Community Health Sciences in
the School of Public Health and Director of the
School's International Health Program. He has
extensive research and background in child
health in developing countries, and has
extensive experience in graduate and
postgraduate training, having trained more than
40 doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars,
from many developing countries in the field of
Nutrition. He has had a contieous track record
of research and publication in peer-reviewed
nutritional journals, as well as policy papers,
multiple research reports, and published
abstracts and book chapters. Much of his
research has contributed directly to policy
formulation, rethinking of existing policies and
programs, which is particularly challenging in
the Middle East countries. Dr. Galal’s scholarly
focus and activities have evolved over the years
from laboratory and clinical studies based on
his doctoral and post-doctoral training, to
functional impacts of both macronutrients and
micronutrients malnutrition. He contributed to
the important findings with significant policy
findings that mild-moderate protein energy
malnutrition is associated with adverse
functional outcomes such as poor physical growth
and mental development in infants and children.
Dr. Galal is considered among the top leaders
and scholars in the field of comparative human
nutrition and global health. His pioneer
contributions is in three interrelated domains,
specifically in comparative analysis and
nutrition policy development, research that
accounts for the cociocultural dimensions of
human nutrition, and leadership in nutrition and
global health institutions. Dr. Galal was
recognized as an outstanding leadership, the
prestigious International Union of Nutritional
Sciences has appointed him for three terms since
1997 as its Secretary General.
